Many American citizens are expressing their protest against this administration by not buying. Period. I have cut back my own spending to the bone, especially with businesses/corporations that have cut back on DEI or support this administration that is clearly setting this country on a path of dictatorship.
Yes, it will get worse. Economic blackouts have been happening and are being organized for the upcoming months. The sheer numbers of the unemployed of federal workers filing for unemployment will be hitting soon across the states. Countries like Canada are boycotting American goods and services, such as tourist travel. Farmers have lost important federal contracts or grants and face bankruptcy (affecting the food chain and creating higher prices). And then there's always the egg issue and bird flu.
I am bracing for the possibility of a financial crash.
Please keep up the updates. The data to support what is happening is critical to people's understanding that what they do at the cash register can make a difference.
"vibes: big negative; real spending: big positive": I am not an economist, but doesn't higher present spending make sense if there are high inflation expectations? I would buy stuff now if I think it will be more expensive later.
Yes it does. But this is also how inflation works. The increased buying represents greater demand. If the supply cannot be rapidly increased then prices rise. Too many buyers chasing too few goods.
"Also, as I learned from much direct experience, you have to both listen to what consumers say and look at what they do". IMO, this was corp media's biggest failing in the Biden administration, and that's saying a lot. All we heard what what consumers were saying. Consumer sentiment, which was massively influenced by corp media, was perpetually pessimistic. We heard next to nothing about what consumers were doing, which was better and better based on economic indicators as the administration's legislative and administrative policies kicked in.
I've had several unfortunate inklings about what the long game of the "Illuminati " is here but I don't want to put any of that energy into words. I have ultimate faith in the humanity, decency and determination of the majority of US Americans. We will prevail. We are a community of smaller communities. We stand together and we lift each other up.
Thank you for this update.

The sounds you can't hear are the screams coming from those of us on fixed incomes. Good thing our kids have basements we can move into.
Non-consumerism is our most potent weapon against oligarchs and tyranny.
Buyer's Strike now! Let's party like it's 1929! 〽️
Is that a riff on Buffalo Springfield?

Higher spending fuels the inflationary fire.
Something happening for sure. Can you make it go away? Thanks for thoughtful analysis and hard work.
Great minds think alike? At least when it comes to titles!

It seems pretty clear - and predictable.
It's what happens when a President makes promises he can't keep (the cost of eggs)
It's what happens when a President makes promises to increase inflation (insane levels of blanket tariffs)
It's what happens when a President illegally puts a greedy oligarch in charge of the government (You Know Who)
It's what happens when enough Americans wake up and realize it's time to grab the DOGE by the tail.
